Starting this December, there will be no rumbling sound of railways as trains to go 'silent', thanks to this new technology. Indian Railways is planning to use the new Head on Generation (HoG) technology where the power will be drawn from the overhead electric supply, instead of the noisy power cars.
At present, there are two power generator cars which emit fumes and make noise when the trains run. Indian Railway plans to replace the power generator cars with one silent generator car and a LSLRD (LHB Second Luggage, Guard & Divyaang Compartment). LSLRD will convert power from the overhead supply using the HoG technology. LSLRD will also have a specially-designed cabin with additional seats for passengers and extra space for luggage.
The 'silent' car will be used for emergency. With the use this new technology, the seats in trains will be increased.
Indian Railways plans to convert all LHB trains to HoG system by the end of this year, said Rajesh Agarwal, Member (Rolling Stock), Railway Board. Currently, the power cars generate a 105-decibel noise, which will reduce to nil by year-end, Agarwal told PTI.
Head on Generation technology taps power supply overhead power lines and distributes it to train coaches. The railways is in the process of converting its Linke Hofmann Bosche coaches into the HoG system. A total of 342 trains have already been converted into HoG so far. Indian Railways has saved ₹800 crore every year by implementing new HOG technology, according to the official. Currently, the cost of power is over ₹36 per unit. With the implementation of the new HoG technology, the power will cost ₹6 per unit.
More than four lakh additional berths will be available to passengers everyday when the railways will move to a HoG technology. Officials say by October 2019, over 5,000 coaches of the Indian Railways will operate on the new technology.
All the new LHB coaches that are being made at the production units are being made HOG compliant. 284 more trains are to be converted into HOG by the year end to be resulting in more savings, said Agarwal.
The conversion work has been allotted to zonal railways and field officers. Once the conversion is complete, Indian Railways will save around ₹1390 crore.

New german coaches to make journey more comfortable & safer
The Howrah- Titlagarh Ispat Superfast Express will run with 18 new German-designed LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches from Saturday.
The train travels via Tatanagar.
“The new LHB coaches will ensure comfortable journey for passengers. The onboard catering services will be available as usual,” Sanjay Ghosh, chief public relations officer of South Eastern Railway,
told The Telegraph on Friday.
LHB coaches have advanced braking system for increased safety at higher speeds. They are also anti-telescopic, which means that they do not flip even if the train derails or suffers a collision.
The train comprises three AC chair cars, one AC-3 tier and 14 second-class chair cars.
According to Ghosh, there will be no change in the fare structure following the introduction of the new rake.
Railway sources said the necessary fittings and commissioning work in the coaches were completed last week.
Passengers were happy with the development.
“I am excited to board the train with new and modern LHB coaches. I have some office work in Calcutta next week. I will prefer that train,” said Amit Agarwal, a local businessman.
Another regular traveller and an Adityapur-based industrialist, Gurudas Ray, said he was looking forward to a comfortable journey.
Earlier this year, the Railway Board had communicated its decision to replace the train’s conventional coaches with swanky LHB ones.
The LHB coaches have been manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai’s Perambur.

The same order, given out by Indian Railways last year, was taken back after meeting with stiff criticism.
The order extends to food stalls in the stations' premises as well. Photo: YouTube
New Delhi: For Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, the Western Railways has rehashed a year-old plan for honouring the occasion and announced that it will not serve non-vegetarian food anywhere on its premises, reports say.
similar plan, put forth by the Indian Railway Board through an order sent to IRCTC to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti as ‘Vegetarian Day’ last year, had to be scuttled after drawing flak from various quarters.
Indian Express, in its report, quoted a circular issued on Monday by Western Railway’s Ahmedabad division assistant commercial manager F.M. Gaurav Jain as having said, “All station masters are advised to follow these instructions and ensure that no non-vegetarian food is served at any catering unit at the stations.”
The order reportedly extends to licensed eating stalls at the 510 railway stations under the Western Railway division as well, the paper reported.

Various divisions of the Railways have come up with plans to honour the occasion as well. Twenty two of Central Railway’s diesel locomotives will be painted with Gandhi’s picture in the backdrop of the national flag’s colours, reported ANI. They will be attached to trains that will be ceremonially flagged off from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
Gandhi was a famous advocate for vegetarianism in his time and his line has now been adapted with increasing enthusiasm under the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. In his pamphlet, The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism, Gandhi had notably pronounced milk as non-vegetarian and eggs as vegetarian.
His eagerness for vegetarianism, however, operated largely within the ambit of its purported heath benefits. However, discussions on the exclusion of eggs, onions and other items of indeterminate food groups from midday meals in schools and Anganwadis – largely as a political ploy to further an ideology – have recently dominated news.

MUMBAI :State-owned Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp. Ltd (IRCTC), which sells tickets for Indian Railways and manages its catering, plans to launch its initial public offering (IPO) on 30 September.
The plan to launch the IPO comes immediately after a sharp turnaround in India stock markets including the benchmark Sensex, which gained 8% or 2,899 points after the government cut corporate tax on Friday.
Several firms had seen IPO approvals lapse in the past few months because of volatile stock markets as a result of slowing economic growth, the US-China global trade
war and rising crude prices.
The proposed IPO is expected to see the government sell stake worth ₹480 crore through an offer for sale, said a person aware of the development. IRCTC is expected to announce the IPO price band on Wednesday.
The government aims to offload up to 20 million shares in IRCTC via the IPO, Mint reported on 23 August. The government’s stake will come down 12.5% after the stake sale.
IRCTC’s business is divided into four segments—internet ticketing, catering, packaged drinking water under the ‘Rail Neer’ brand, and travel and tourism. Its sales rose 25% to ₹1,899 crore, profit grew 23.5% to ₹272.5 crore in fiscal 2019 over the previous year, its draft red herring prospectus filed with regulators in August said.
