in train hits in Assam while they were crossing the tracks under the NFR, which covers north Bengal, parts of eastern Bihar and the Northeast. The NFR was having tough time to tackle the problem, mainly in Assam, having 29 elephant corridors and the tracks passing through forests. "Desperate to find a solution, Ravilesh Kumar, the then divisional railway manager of Rangiya railway division took the lead and formed a team, which carried out the first testing of honey bee buzz on a pet elephant at Rangapara. When the second testing was conducted in Phulbari Tea Estate under Rangiya division, it was found that the wild elephant started moving away once the honey bee sound was generated," said a statement issued by Pranav Jyoti Sharma, chief public relations officer of NFR. "Following the successful trial, equipment was designed to generate amplified sound of honey bee audible from a distance of about 700 to 800 meters. The first instrument was installed at a level crossing gate between Azara and Kamakhya station under Rangiya division. There are 46 such equipment installed all over NFR at present," he said. "The gatemen posted in level crossing gates, where the device has been installed claimed that its use is very helpful in diverting herds of elephants, especially when trains are approaching and dashing become almost eminent," it added.
Sharma claimed that its efforts including speed limit and use of the honey bee sound helped NFR save as many as 1,014 elephants since 2014.
A forum of wildlife conservationist groups recently said that at least 80 elephants die every year in human-elephant conflicts in the country with 655 deaths reported between 2009 and 2017, including 120 by trains.

GUWAHATI: The preservation of wildlife sanctuaries is of crucial importance and Deepor Beel has been making headlines with the tamper in its ecological balance. As such, a press meet was organized to discuss and comprehend measures to preserve the bionetwork of the wildlife sanctuary.
In 1989, the first railway track was allowed with the declaration that Deepor Beel cannot be a wildlife sanctuary, however, during the same year, a proposal was submitted to announce the Beel as a wildlife sanctuary. In 2009, the proposal was affirmed.

boundary of Deepor Beel was objected on the ground that it would disturb the ecology of Rani Reserve forest. This alternative was abandoned by the Railway and they started construction on the northern alternative. During the meet, objection was raised on implementation of double railway line which would pose a threat to the biodiversity of Deepor Beel. The demand to seal off the dumping zone in Bora Gaon was also raised. Moreover, trains running through the elephant corridor endanger the mammals, so steps should be taken to ensure safety of wildlife in the area. The Team accompanied by the CCF (Wildlife) and Head, Env.Division, ASTEC, visited the Beel in the afternoon of August 13, 2008 after the presentation and discussions at ASTEC. The team was taken to the watch tower located at the edge of the Beel and shown the measures undertaken for protecting the wetlands by constructing embankments. The Team observed that the watch tower supported by bamboo coated with cement mortar, was almost in a dilapidated condition (a portion of the cement concrete slab in the ceiling missing and the cement coated bamboo pillars seemingly giving way) and the construction of embankments was also half done. The Team was told that the structure has been handed over to the Engg College authorities for maintenance and continuous watch.
On the other side of the beel towards the NH 34, the Team could see a number of brick kilns and the city’s garbage dumping ground. ASTEC said that since the garbage dumping yard is abutting the margin of the beel, there is every possibility of the solid and liquid wastes, leaching into the beel during rainy season, further deteriorating the water quality. Some of the natural and threatening the Deepor Beel include construction of railway line along the southern boundary and industrial development within the periphery among many others.

Tunnels to accommodate railway tracks at Deepor Beel stretch in GuwahatiG Plus News
December 18, 2018 14:46hrs GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has prepared a proposal for construction of two tunnels on the southern stretch of railway track running through the Deepor Beel area. After a detailed survey of the Deepor Beel area to check the feasibility of constructing a railway tunnel between Gates No.273 and 274 on the south bank rail track running through the water body NFR prepared a proposal, along with a working drawing for permanent mitigation of the problem and submitted it to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden of the State and all the concerned departments. having a length of 570 metres each for accommodating the rail tracks – the existing one and the under-construction double line – with a provision of elephant corridor over these tunnels. However, in order to make a path for elephant movement across the proposed tunnels, earthwork will be done from the hillside and will be sloped towards the Deepor Beel.
