BHUBANESWAR: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has commissioned End of Train Telemetry (EOTT) system to run trains without guards. It is the first railway zone in the country to use the cutting edge technology for operation of trains without brake van and guards.
The field trial for Indian Railways was conducted between Talcher and Paradip section recently when a freight train successfully reached destination with EOTT system in place. Electric Loco Shed, Angul has commissioned and tested the technology.
EOTT system mainly consists of Head of Train (HOT) fitted in locomotive and End

of Train (EOT) fitted on last vehicle of the train. EOTT has Global Positioning System (GPS) module to indicate location of the train and Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication module to transfer data to server besides the radio device for communication and control between HOT and EOT.
High visibility marker light flasher device in EOT has been provided with automatic switching on and off based on the ambient light condition. Break power pressure of the last vehicle of the train is displayed to train driver in the HOT display in cab of the locomotive. The driver can confirm break power pressure drop in the train up to last vehicle during application of air brake by observing break power pressure of last vehicle remotely in the HOT display.
The system allows to apply emergency brake from last vehicle of the train by opening a valve in EOT remotely from the cab of locomotive. It has the provision for automatic application of train emergency air brakes also from rear when emergency train air brake is applied by loco pilot in the cab and the simultaneous application of brake from front and rear will reduce the braking distance and time for controlling the train.
In case of train parting confirmed by loco pilot, emergency brake from EOT, if required by train driver can be applied in order to bring the rear portion to an early halt. The available provisions will boost the confidence of loco pilots during running of trains with EOTT.
Chief PRO of ECoR Kausalendra Kishore Khadanga said operation of trains with EOTT is an ambitious project of Railways for implementation in fast track mode.
“A few more trial runs will be conducted in the State before completely adopting the system. The technology will eliminate the requirement of brake van and practice of employing guard in the train,” he added.

BHUBANESWAR: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has decided to add four more coaches in mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) trains to accommodate more passengers. Now these trains have 12 coaches. Initially, the ECoR will add four more coaches in 68422/68421 Puri-Angul MEMU train. After augmentation of these coaches, it will be the longest MEMU train in the state. It will start running from Puri on February 11 and from Angul on the very next day. Official sources said the railway zone will augment four coaches in other MEMU trains in phased manner. It has around eight MEMU rakes. The ECoR has also decided to run MEMU train between Keonjhargarh and Bhubaneswar from February 12. It will replace earlier conventional coaches of 58425/58426 Kendujhargarh-Bhubaneswar Passenger train. This train will run as 68425/68426 Kendujhargarh-Bhubaneswar MEMU from both the directions with effect from February 12 from Bhubaneswar and February 13 from Kendujhargarh. The timings and...

stoppages for this train between Kendujhargarh and Bhubaneswar will same as per the earlier passenger train, ECoR official sources said.Railways run these MEMU trains at suburban and rural areas. It is different from conventional mainline trains. These trains have engines at both ends and run by alternating current (AC) drawn from overhead electric cables.Conventional mainline trains take time in the process of halting and leaving a station. But the MEMU take comparatively less time to halt and leave the station because of its latest technology. These trains have a potential for average speed increment up to 20 km per hour in comparison to the conventional passenger trains, said the officer.

Bhubaneswar: Several new railway, thermal power and other projects in the state are now hanging in balance due to several factors, one among them is the lack of approval for the diversion of forest lands in these areas where the proposals have been made for the new projects.
A recent statement of the state government, as submitted before the Odisha Assembly, claimed that a total of 13 such new projects are hanging in balance for the need of forest land diversion. Several of them are stuck at different levels of the approval process, the statement of the government said.

among the pending project is related to the National Thermal Power Corporation’s Darlipali Super Thermal Power Project which was proposed for Sundargarh and Jharsuguda. While the project got initial approval from the Union government, it is now pending with the user agency awaiting compliance report.
Similar was the fate of the MGR Project of Orissa Power Generation Corporation (OPGC). It was proposed that it would require diversion of 13.630 hectare of Sabik Kissam Revenue forest in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda. It is now said to be pending with the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests for approval.
The rail-line projects are also said to be equally hit by the delays in granting approval or for other actions. The Talcher-Bimlagarh New rail- line project under phase II is also hanging in balance due to issue with the non-diversion of forest land of 244.623 hectare for the project. This project has, till now, not even placed for the Union ministry’s approval for forest land diversion.
Khurda Road-Bolangir line is also one of the projects which has been delayed due to delay in grant of approvals. While this is said to be delayed due to grant of the approval from the Ministry of Environment and Forest of the Union government, it is yet to cross the stage-I milestone.
Other projects which are delayed due to pending approval included-Talcher-Sambalpur double rail-line project, Nirgundi-Bhadrak third line project, doubling of Jaroli Porjanpur rail line, Sambalpur-Titlagarh rail-line doubling projects among others.
