CHENNAI: Southern Railway will introduce two Antyodaya Express, fully unreserved daily trains between Chennai and Southern Tamil Nadu, according to the new timetable that will come into effect from November 1.
It is learnt that a train comprising 16-second sitting (2S) coaches will start at 12.30am at Tambaram and will reach Tirunelveli at 3.30 pm, via Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchirappalli and Madurai. On its return journey it will leave Tirunelveli at 9.45 pm and will reach Tambaram the next day at 5.30 pm.
Another Antyodaya Express to Sengottai will leave Tambaram at 7 am
and will reach Sengottai at 10.30pm.
The train will be operated via Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchchirappalli, Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar, Rajapayalam and Tenkasi. Similarly, the train would start at 10.30pm at Sengottai and reach Tambaram at 6.00am.
The two unreserved trains will come as a big relief to southern district rail passengers as these sectors have huge demands throughout the year. “The new trains will be flagged off by Railway Minister and the date will be notified soon,” said a railway official.
Another much-awaited demand of Southern Railway passengers — AC Express during the weekend — also has been included in the timetable. From November 3, Chennai Central-Madurai AC Express will run on Fridays. The return will be on Saturdays.
“The existing Chennai-Madurai bi-weekly Duronto Express will continue to run on Mondays and Wednesdays. The ticket fares will be less in AC Express compared to Duronto. Based on popularity of the AC Express, Duronto may be completely converted into an AC Express in future,” Railway sources said.
The new timetable has also got two Humsafar, three-tier AC Sleeper Expresses for Tamil Nadu.
A three-tier AC Express train will be operated from Tambaram to Bhagat Ki Kothi (Rajasthan) on Fridays, while another Humsafar train from Tirunelveli to Gandhidham (Gujarat) will run on Thursdays. The date of commencement of the train will be announced shortly.
With effect from October 31 Chennai-Palani Super Fast Express will be extended up to Palakkad.
The extension of Chennai Egmore-Thiruvananthpuram Ananthapuri Express to Kollam and Thiruvanathapuram-Palakkad Amritha Express to Madurai will also begin on the same day.

Pay-and-use toilets functioning in several MRTS stations too, say officials
: The Chennai Division of Southern Railway has finally commissioned toilets in all the stations in the suburban network. Officials took to micro blogging site Twitter to announce functioning of toilets in all 75 suburban stations.
In those stations that do not have permanent buildings, the Division has installed mobile toilets.
The railway administration
has also roped in non-governmental organisations, apart from private contractors, to make sure that all of them are manned. However, commuters told The Hindu on Wednesday that though the mobile toilets were installed, in Tambaram Sanatorium railway station for instance, they were locked.
Southern Railway officials said they had fixed the charges for using the facilities at Rs. 2 and Rs. 5 . They added that the charges were standard as decided by the Southern Railway headquarters . It may be recalled that the Chennai High Court had in February, directed the Southern Railway to ensure clean toilets in all stations following a Public Interest Litigation petition by the Satta Panchayat Iyakkam, a non-governmental organisation.
“It is a basic amenity which the Southern Railway has to provide all its commuters. Creation of public toilets is one, but their proper maintenance is another,” said Senthil Arumugham of the Iyakkam. He said that they would conduct another round of sample survey and submit the results of the same to the High Court in about a fortnight. Commuters said that proper maintenance of toilets would go a long way towards achieving the objective of the railway’s Swachch Bharat mission .
Officials said toilet maintenance contracts for several stations in MRTS section were also renewed recently.
However, officials at the stations also said it was hard to retain contractors to maintain toilets in those stations where it is not profitable owing to poor patronage.

Women have time and again been told to be safe and not use subways late at night for fear of being harassed. But in some parts of the city, they have a difficult time even in broad daylight.Walking through the subway from Tambaram Sanatorium station to GST Road is part of the daily commute for numerous women who work in the area. The subway from the railway station leads to a small street and a short walk will take one to the main road.“When I come for the morning shift, the station is quite crowded with office-goers. Pretending to be pushed by the crowd, some fall on me and my female colleagues. When we protest, they run away through the crowd,” says Krithika Raj*, a 25 year old software engineer. Once the office rush is over, the station is quite deserted, as is the subway, says Krithika, “There have been several instances...
of men following us threateningly. They also expose themselves indecently. It is very embarrassing.” For the past couple of weeks, she has been taking the office cab, although travelling by train saves her a lot of time.
Nalini Devan*, who works in the hospitality industry, narrates an incident that happened just last week: “I was crossing the subway at noon when a man started walking uncomfortably close to me.
I quickened my pace and so did he; when I moved closer to the wall, he tried to corner me. As no one else was there, I yelled at him and he walked away but stood at the top of the stairs and continued to stare at me till I got into an auto outside the subway.”
She added that in the one-and-half years that she has been travelling by EMU from Park Station to Tambaram Sanatorium, she has not seen a policeman manning the station or the subway.
“We see lots of policemen in Guindy, Mambalam and Tambaram stations. People don’t misbehave there as they know there might be a cop somewhere around to whom we can go to for help. Here we have no option but to fend for ourselves. Even one policeman will make a big difference in boosting our confidence to travel alone.” says Nalini.
