Going back on its decision, the Western Railway has decided to not stop the services of three trains, including the 107-year-old narrow gauge heritage train between Vaghai and Billimora, in Gujarat permanently.
Other two narrow gauge trains run between Miyagam, Choranda and Malsar, and Choranda junction and Moti Karal.
On December 10, 2020, Mudit Chandra, Executive Director (Freight Marketting) of the Ministry of Railways, issued a letter to the Western Railway General Manager, ordering permanent closure of 11 “uneconomic branch lines” and narrow gauge sections of the Western Railway, including three from Gujarat.

On Friday, Chandra issued another letter to the same official, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, stating, “Notification for permanent closure of uneconomic branch lines and narrow gauge sections had been issued from Board, vide letter under reference (i). However, in view letter under reference (iii) of Heritage Directorate of Railway Board, and subsequent correspondence from Western Railway, the matter has been reviewed in consultations of Finance Directorate of Railway board. Consequently it has been decided to keep three heritage lines viz., Miyagam-Choranda-Malsar, Choranda Junction-Moti Karal and Billimora Junction-Vaghai… the notification issued vide letter, will not be applicable on the above mentioned three heritage lines. This issue is in consultation with the Finance Directorate of the Ministry of Railways.”
Anu Tyagi, Railway Area Manager of Valsad railway station, said, “We have received the letter from our head office… Now the narrow gauge heritage train connecting Billimora to Vaghai will not be stopped. Once the Covid situation turns normal and after we get instructions from our head office, we will resume the heritage train service.”
The Vaghai-Billimora train, which started in 1913, was a vestige of Gaekwad dynasty who ruled the princely state of Baroda. Tribal people from interior Dangs commute by this train regularly. The train covers a distance of 63 kilometres.
Local people as well as both Congress and BJP leaders had made representations to the Western Railway authorities urging them not to permanently close the heritage train service.
Social worker Bipin Rajput said, “We are happy about the decision. The victory is of the people of Dangs. We are thankful to the Ministry of Railways, who took the train’s heritage value into consideration.”

The narrow gauge train connecting Billimora in Navsari district with Waghai in Dang district was started by rulers of the Gaekwad dynasty of the princely state of Baroda in 1913.
The Western Railways has decided to scrap 11 narrow gauge routes and branch lines in Gujarat, calling them unviable. One of these is the 107-year-old Billimora-Waghai line, once run by the Gaekwad Baroda State Railway (GBSR), against the closure of which political leaders have started a campaign pitching.
History of the Billimora-Waghai train
narrow gauge train connecting Billimora in Navsari district with Waghai in Dang district was started by rulers of the Gaekwad dynasty of the princely state of Baroda in 1913. This was much before the Western Railway came into existence in 1951 with the merger of the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway, the Saurashtra, Rajputana and Jaipur state Railways. At the instance of Gaekwad rulers, the British laid railway tracks and it was operated by Gaekwad Baroda State Railway (GBSR) owned by Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The Gaekwad jurisdiction was spread across parts of Saurashtra, Mehsana in north Gujarat, and Billimora in South Gujarat.
The 63-km Billimora-Waghai and the 19-km Choranda-Moti Karal routes are among those five routes the Indian Railways had proposed to be preserved as “industrial heritage” in 2018. Sources said the Billimora-Waghai train that runs among Gujarat’s most forested routes, was used for the purpose of transportation of sag timber from deep forest areas. For about 24 years the train was run by a steam engine, which was replaced by diesel engine in 1937. After Independence the Western Railway took charge of the train from GBSR. In 1994, the original steam engine was put on the display at Churchgate Heritage Gallery in Mumbai.
Before the pandemic lockdown, the five-coach train made two trips from Billimora to Waghai, covering nine railway stations — Gandevi, Chikhli, Rankuwa, Dholikuwa, Anaval, Unai, Kevdi road, Kala Amba, and Dungarda. The railway tickets were available at Unai, Billimora and Waghai Railway stations and the entire journey costs Rs 15 one way .
What was the railway order

The lines to be closed are Nadiad-Bhadran, Ankleshwar-Rajpipla, Boriyavi-Vadtal-Swaminarayan, Kosamba-Umarpada, Samlaya Junction-Timba road, Jhagadiya Junction-Netrang, Chhuchhapura-Tankhala, Chhota Udepur-Jambusar, Billimora-Waghai, Choranda-Moti Karal and Chandod-Malsar.
How does it affect the tribals
The train was majorly used by the tribals staying in the interior villages in Dangs district in South Gujarat, which has no road connectivity to reach towns like Gandevi and Billimora for work to sell their agriculture produce. The craftsmen of Dangs district also used this train to sell their products to the shop keepers in these town. So do the students from interior villages to go to colleges in the towns.
Who want to save the train and why
Soon after the announcement to scrap the services, newly BJP elected MLA from Dangs, Vijay Patel, Congress MLA of Vansda in Navsari district Anant Patel and Bipin Rawat, a social worker of Waghai, started a movement to restart the services for tribals. Patel made a written representation to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal where he has said that it was the lifeline for the tribals and should ideally be upgraded and used for tourism. MLA Anant Patel started a relay of protest at each of the railway stations on the route.
Rawat claims there is no health services in the interior villages in Dangs and during medical emergency the patients use this train to reach the towns for medical treatment in government and private hospitals. Even the tribal people, who wanted to go to Surat and Mumbai, use this train to reach Billimora station for further rail connectivity via broad gauge.

वांसदा/खेरगाम. रेलवे बोर्ड द्वारा अंग्रेजी शासनकाल के समय में बड़ौदा के महाराज सयाजीराव गायकवाड़ द्वारा शुरू की गई बिलीमोरा-वघई नैरोगेज ट्रेन को बंद करने के खिलाफ लोगों ने आक्रोश व्यक्त किया है। मंगलवार को वांसदा चिखली से कांग्रेस विधायक अनंत पटेल की अगुवाई में रेलवे संघर्ष समिति के बैनर तले उनाई रेलवे स्टेशन पर सांकेतिक धरना प्रदर्शन भी किया गया। इसमें स्थानीय लोगों के साथ व्यापारी और आदिवासी समाज के लोग तथा कांग्रेस कार्यकर्ता शामिल हुए।ट्रेन को इस क्षेत्र के लोगों के लिए बहुत उपयोगी बताते हुए चालू न करने पर आगामी दिनों में उग्र आंदोलन की चेतावनी दी। इस धरने में आसपास के गांव के लोग भी पहुंचे थे। कोविड की गाइड लाइन का पालन करते हुए लोगों ने ट्रेन को बंद करने का विरोध किया। इस दौरान पुलिस का बंदोबस्त था। लोगों ने ट्रेन चालू करो, जब तक ट्रेन नहीं तब तक चैन नहीं, ट्रेन डांग में व्यापार की...
पूंजी है, जैसे नारे लिखी तख्तीयां थाम रखी थी। इस दौरान लोगों ने आदिवासी समाज के साथ अन्याय बंद करने का नारा भी लगाया। वांसदा विधायक अनंत पटेल ने कहा कि पूरे गुजरात में 11 नैरोगेज ट्रेन आदिवासियों के उत्थान के लिए शुरू की गई थी, लेकिन आदिवासी विरोधी सरकार ने उनके साथ अन्याय किया है और बिलीमोरा से वघई तक जाने वाली एक मात्र ट्रेन को भी बंद करने की घोषणा कर दी। ट्रेन को चालू न करने पर आगामी दिनों में अलग-अलग जगहों पर आंदोलन की घोषणा की गई।दूसरी तरफ इस मामले को लेकर भाजपा और कांग्रेस आमने-सामने आ गए हैं। भाजपा सांसद केसी पटेल ने कांग्रेस पर आदिवासी समाज को गुमराह करने का आरोप लगाया है। वलसाड डांग सांसद डॉ. केसी पटेल ने कहा कि कोरोना को लेकर ट्रेन बंद है। उन्होंने कहा है कि रेलवे बोर्ड व मंत्रालय से बात करने पर बताया गया कि यह ट्रेन जल्दी शुरू होगी। इस ट्रेन को हेरीटेज ट्रैक में शामिल किया गया है इसलिए इसे बंद नहीं किया जाएगा। कांग्रेस पर आरोप लगाते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि कांग्रेस मुद्दाविहीन है और सिर्फ राजनीति के लिए लोगों को गुमराह कर रही है। उन्होंने कहा कि 18 दिसंबर को रेलवे की टीम आकर सर्वे भी करेगी।

जब बात ट्रेन से सफर करने की आती है तो हम एक्साइटेड हो जाते हैं. हम कितना भी बस या फ्लाइट
से सफर कर लें लेकिन ट्रेन से सफर करना हमेशा से ही इंट्रेस्टिंग रहा है. कभी-कभी हम ट्रेन से सफर करते समय बचपन के दिनों को याद करने लगते हैं. साथ ही, अपने परिवार के लोगों से ट्रेन से जुड़े किस्से भी सुनते हैं. लेकिन अब एक मामला निकलकर सामने आया है जो सचमुच चौंकाने वाला है. दरअसल, एक ट्रेन पश्चिमी गुजरात में पिछले 100 सालों से बिलिमोरा-वाघई रूट पर चल रही थी लेकिन अब इस ट्रेन का सफर यहीं ख़त्म हो जाएगा. बता दें कि इस ट्रेन को पश्चिमी रेलवे का हिस्सा माना जाता था.
रेलवे मंत्रालय के अनुसार, ये ट्रेन अब अन-इकोनॉमिक होती जा रही है. इसलिए इसे हमेशा के लिए बंद कर दिया जाएगा. ख़ास बात ये है कि इस ट्रेन सेवा को ब्रिटिश सरकार ने साल 1913 में शुरू की थी. वहीं, इस ट्रेन को पश्चिमी गुजरात के आदिवासी अंदरूनी इलाकों में जाने के लिए इस्तेमाल करते थे.
हर दिन 63 किमी का सफर तय करती थी ट्रेन 
कोरोना महामारी की वजह से इस ट्रेन का परिचालन बंद हो गया था. अब इस ट्रेन को हमेशा के लिए बंद कर दिया जाएगा. ये ट्रेन हर दिन 63 किलोमीटर का सफर तय करती थी. इस रूट में आने-जाने के लिए कोई और साधन नहीं था. साथ ही यहां अब तक सड़क का भी निर्माण नहीं हो सका है. ऐसे में इस ट्रेन का महत्व काफी ज्यादा था.
महज 15 रुपये था किराया 
इस ट्रेन पर ज्यादातर आदिवासी सफर करते थे. वहीं, इस ट्रेन का किराया महज 15 रुपये था. इसके अलावा, इस ट्रेन में 5 कोच थे. बता दें कि कोरोना महामारी के कारण रेलवे को काफी ज्यादा नुकसान उठाना पड़ा है. ऐसे में मंत्रालय ने इस ट्रेन को हमेशा के लिए बंद करने का फैसला लिया है.

Surat: If all goes well, Billimora-Waghai heritage narrow gauge train may find another station at Saputara, Gujarat’s only hill station, Western Railway (WR) authorities are seriously thinking on extending the train to Saputara on a proposal submitted by former member of passenger service committee (PSC), ministry of railway, Rakesh Shah.In his representation, Shah has stated that the extension of the heritage train would not only boost tourism in Saputara, but will allow tourists from south Gujarat to take the safest mode of transport to the hill station. Also, there are sponsors in Surat, who are ready to invest in revamping and renovating the train and its coaches on heritage theme. “I met railway minister Piyush Goyal and urged him to extend the heritage train to Saputara last week. Two days ago, I met DRM WR, Sunil Kumar, who was keen on extending the train to Saputara,” said former PSC member, Rakesh...
Shah, who is member of Zonal Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (ZURCC).Shah added, “The WR has to earmark Rs100 crore for laying tracks and other infrastructure from Waghai to Saputara. I have a few sponsors in Surat who are ready to spend money on renovation of the train and its coaches.”At present, the heritage train operates four daily trips between Waghai in Dang district and Billmora in Navsari district. The train starts at 6am from Waghai to reach Billimora at 9.15am and that the last trip starts from Billimora at 8pm to reach Waghai at 11.15pm.The three-wagon heritage train between Billimora and Waghai is a blessing for tribal people in Dang, including students who travel from Waghai to Billimora on daily basis. The students from Dang travel further to Surat, Vapi and Valsad for studying. Every monsoon, this narrow gauge train is stopped due to fear of landslides in the hilly terrain. This year as well, the operations were stopped for more than a month but WR authorities had to restart the train following strong representation by railway users four days ago. The Billimora-Waghai narrow gauge train completed 106 years in July 2019. The 63-km track of this train was laid by British at the instance of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad in 1913. The train was supposed to be a part of Gaekwad’s Baroda State Railway (GBSR). The motive behind this track was to keep connection with the royal state and transportation of precious sag wood from forests. After Independence, GBSR became a part of Western Railway. The Billimora-Waghai narrow gauge train had steam engine for almost 24 years before a diesel engine was pressed into service in 1937. The old steam engine was put on display in 1994 in Mumbai’s Churchgate Station as railway heritage.
