The restoration work of the up-line (Pune to Mumbai) is underway at the Bhor Ghat section on Pune-Mumbai railway route, due to which two trains have been cancelled and five others diverted since October 3. To provide a long-lasting solution to this rail traffic congestion in the ghat section, the central railway has initiated a project for installing a fourth railway line.
Three rail lines already exist: up line, middle line and down line in the ghat section. Once the fourth line is operational, it will give relief to rail traffic enabling more trains to run daily through the ghats, said railway officials.

Sutar, Central Railway’s spokesperson said, “Daily, on an average, 74 trains pass through this Bhor ghat section and we have to monitor the operations very closely as it is a crucial stretch between Pune and Mumbai. So we decided to have a fourth line in the ghat section which is under conceptualization. Experts and senior officials have been working on it.”
Similarly the Central Railway has identified 4 to 5 risky spots in the ghat section with regular landslides and falling boulders during the monsoon. Small tunnels have been planned as a permanent solution to this.
“There are some spots which we have identified which are open and landslides happens here quite often. It creates problems to our train operations, then trains get delayed and entire Ghat section is affected. So we have plans to build small tunnels at these 4 to 5 spots and this work is at the primary stage. Senior officials are into discussions and hopefully this project will start soon.” added Sutar.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Nov 20 (ANI): The Central Railway has announced that the services at Up line in South-East Ghat (Bhor Ghat) will be resumed by mid-January of next year.Sharing details of the development, Central Public Relationship Officer, Shivaji Sutar said, "The restoration work at Bhor Ghar is at war footing. Around 50 labours are working in three shifts round the clock since the services were disrupted at the route after the heavy rains and landslide on October 3."Due to heavy rains, the 30-meter approach of embankment has gradually settled. Following the landslide and disruption of services at the up line at Bhor Ghat consultations were done with engineers of Konkan Railway and other experts after which it was decided to extend the length of the bridge from its original length of 150 metres to 195 metres.Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Infrastructure, Central railway Ashutosh Gupta said that estimated cost for this...

Tough task: The track at the section runs between a valley over 50 metres deep on one side and a rock face around 50 metre high on the other.  | Photo Credit: Special arrangement
The Central Railway (CR) is facing an uphill challenge, both literally and figuratively, as it builds a 43-metre bridge on Bhor Ghat between Karjat and Lonavala. The work on the bridge is the main reason why CR has had to cancel several intercity and shuttle services between Mumbai and Pune and has short-terminated five long-distance trains at Pune.
Despite

the difficult task, the CR aims to have the line functioning by January 15.
The section, known as Km 117 in railway parlance, lies on the Up line (towards Mumbai) between Nagnath and Monkey Hill stations. The ghat section has three lines: Up, Down and Middle, with only the latter two being functional at present due to the work.
The track at the section runs between a valley over 50 metres deep on one side and a rock face around 50 metre high on the other. The site has no road access, the rail line being the only way to reach it. To complicate matters further, a part of the track lies on a 150-metre-long viaduct and the entire section has two tunnels at each end, further reducing the space to work.
Highlighting some of the challenges, additional divisional railway manager, (infrastructure), CR, Ashutosh Gupta said they had to build two piers to construct the 43-metre-long bridge span, for which 580 micro piles needed to be built. “The material for the work has to be transported by hand for a few kilometres as the train can only reach until a certain point. The machinery for micro piling and JCBs had to be offloaded on a small patch of land next to the track,” he said.
Work is under way round the clock, with 40 to 50 personnel working in each shift and around 350 trucks of boulders and 55 RMC trucks of concrete transported to the site. The viaduct will get two steel girders of 25 and 17 metres respectively, each weighing over 100 tonnes, which will be brought to the site in December.
Transporting concrete to the location posed a huge challenge, and CR had to use chemicals to increase its setting time. “It takes at least one hour to transport material to the site from Lonavala, and concrete usually sets in about half an hour. Hence, we have had to use this new technique to ensure concrete is usable when it reaches the site,” Mr. Sutar said.
The prolonged rains have also added to the problems, and work picked up pace only in November after the last showers in the ghat section. CR has completed around 60% of the piling work. The cost of the construction is expected to be ₹10 crore.
CR has taken up the work after a section of the track began to sink after heavy rainfall in the region. The downpour completely washed away the soil underneath the tracks, creating a gap of nearly four metres.
Chief public relations officer, CR, Shivaji Sutar said even after restoration work, the tracks were sinking. A geotechnical study by experts from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, said the abutment had a 30-metre-deep weakness. “We decided, as a permanent solution, to build a new bridge viaduct connecting the existing one,” Mr. Sutar said.

After heavy rainfall disrupted the rail service between Mumbai and Pune divisions of Central Railways, Indian Railways has decided to cancel all train services between the two cities till August 16. The rail service has been cancelled due to waterlogging and landslides near the railway tracks on the Mumbai-Pune route.
Earlier, there were speculations that the train service would begin by August 9, Friday, but the inspection by the rail corporation on August 8 did not convince them to re-start the rail service that has remained non-functional since August 3.
Among the train

services that will be cancelled are the Deccan Queen, Pragati Express, Intercity Express, Sinhagad Express, Mahalaxmi Express, Koyna Express, Okha-Tamil Nadu Express, Bikaner-Yeshwantpur Express, and Nanded-Panvel Express. Alongside, numerous other train services on the route have been cancelled, short terminated and diverted by the Central Railways.

In the meantime, Railways is also planning to buy around 10 boats to extend their efforts and conduct rescue operations in situations when the trains are stuck at a spot because of flood water. This will ensure that the rail corporation can rescue the passengers instead of waiting for a disaster response agency to arrive with the boats.
The inflatable boats will be equipped with life jackets and will be used to rescue ailing and elderly passengers, besides being used to deliver food packets. According to reports, each inflatable boat will be able to carry five passengers.
Earlier, in a similar instance, Mahalaxmi Express which runs between CSMT and Kolhapur was stuck near Badlapur station after flood water covered the railway tracks.
