As the murder took place elsewhere, it was handed over to the district police for investigation
The railway police have handed over the investigation into the murder of a 24-year-old youth from Khanapur, whose body was found near the railway tracks on the outskirts of the town on September 28 last, to the district police.
Arbaz Mulla, 24, a resident of Khanapur, had a love affair with a girl from another faith and the latter’s family was opposed to their relationship.

and his mother Nazima Sheikh, who works as a teacher in a Urdu school, had been allegedly threatened by the family members of the girl and activists of a Hindu organisation.
Both the families had held a meeting in the presence of Hindu activists and Arbaz had deleted all pictures and chats he had with the girl and had also destroyed the sim card in his cell phone. His mother had also met their monetary demand.
Arbaz, who was in car resale business, was later found dead. His hands and legs had been tied and head severed. Prima facie it appeared that he was murdered at some other place and his body was dumped near the railway tracks.
The railway police had detained eight persons for inquiry. As the murder took place elsewhere, it was handed over to the district police for investigation.
It is suspected that activists of a Hindu organisation murdered Arbaz due to his love affair with the girl and her family members were part of it.
Arbaz’s mother has accused activists of Sriram Sene, one of them identified as ‘Maharaj,’ as responsible for the murder of her son as the accused had threatened them earlier.
It is not known whether the activists named by her were associated with the Sriram Sene or its breakaway faction Sriram Sena Hindustan.
Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi confirmed to DH that the investigation has been handed over to the district police.
A special investigation team led by the deputy superintendent of police of Bailhongal sub-division has been formed. About 40 persons have been inquired, but none of them has been arrested or detained, he said. The Khanapur police have registered a case.

Farmers noticed a torso and a separated head on the railway track near Khanapur and alerted the railway station master.
The Railway police have identified the deceased as Arbaz Mulla aged around 27 who originally hails from Khanapuir but was residing at Azam Nagar Belagavi on September 28.
The mother of Arbaaz has filed a complaint with the police that both his hands were tied and this looks like murder and not suicide as it is being tried to portray.

Amid stiff opposition by a majority of the Karnataka State Wildlife Board members and conservationists, the state government has convened the 14th meeting of the Wildlife Board on Friday to discuss the controversial Hubballi-Ankola railway project. The project, which had already been rejected by the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) and other agencies of Union Environment Ministry for the potential damage it could inflict upon the fragile Western Ghats landscape, is yet again pursued by the state government for implementation.
According to a source in the Forest Department, the issue has been brought before the Board solely based on the report submitted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) that recommended the project along with mitigation measures. However, these measures have

strongly been criticised by conservationists. Guru Prasad, a conservational activist, said, “Already the forest department is reeling under severe staff crunch and how could it patrol the rail line in addition to their routine work? The area proposed for the project is one of the least disturbed forests of Western Ghats and no amount of mitigation measure will be in a position to compensate for the huge cost of ecological damage.”
Contrary to the mitigation measures that IISc scientists have advocated, the Railways since February 2014 to till date are responsible for killing 34 Indian Gaurs, 2 elephants, 2 sambars, a sloth bear and a wild dog on the existing Dharwad-Londa-Vasco Rail lane and Londa-Khanapur-Belagavi Rail lane. Besides, the prime minister-constituted National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has also written to the Railways on the impact of such projects and had previously rejected the proposal based on a scientific report.
Giridhar Kulkarni, wildlife activist, said, “We are hopeful that state Government will make a decision in the interest of forest, wildlife and will not repeat the mistake which it had committed in the case of Bannerghatta ESZ reduction which was against the interest of Wildlife Conservation.”
