If all goes as per plans for the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), the Kalyan station premises will wear a decongested look with better traffic management, parking facilities and flyovers in the next three years.
The Smart City Kalyan Dombivli Corporation Limited (SKDCL), which is planning the project, is now on the verge of planning its design and will soon initiate the ground work.
The foundation stone of the Kalyan Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) was laid down by the Maharashtra state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday.

Juneja, executive engineer, SKDCL, said, “We will first develop a parking facility behind the state transport depot and also design a modernised depot by replacing the existing one. For this, we will require the approval of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). We have got approval to cover the nullah behind the ST depot, where a parking lot will be set up. We have got the nod to do so from IIT Bombay and the work of covering the nullah will be initiated soon.”
The KDMC was included in the smart city mission in 2016. Out of the several other projects planned under the smart city mission, the Kalyan station area development is one such.
Considering the population growth in the Kalyan-Dombivli, which has crossed 15 lakh, the SKDCL has planned SATIS for both Kalyan and Dombivli stations. The Kalyan railway station has around 4 lakh commuters travelling to Mumbai and other cities daily. This leads to major congestion outside the station.
As per the KDMC, the project once implemented will ease congestion for the next 25-30 years.
“SATIS includes revamping the old ST depot, improving traffic management with separate flyovers for buses and small vehicles, designated parking lots and hawking zones and auto rickshaw stands. This will completely change the look of the station and ease congestion for another 30 years,” said Vijay Suryavanshi, commissioner, KDMC.
The SKDCL has appointed three consultants for the work of the SATIS, the estimated cost of which is ₹498Cr.
“The station area congestion has been a nightmare for most of the commuters as they get stuck in the traffic every day. This project should be implemented on a fast track mode and not stalled for years like several other projects,” said Smita Poojari, 38, a commuter who boards a local train from Kalyan to her work place in Mumbai daily.

Commuters complain about design flaw in the newly opened pedestrian bridge at the Kalyan-end on the station, which they claim has made it more like climbing a steep ladder, and puts old people at riskThe new FoB came up recently after authorities pulled down an old creaky bridge at Dombivli station. Pic/Amchi Dombivli Local Community Twitter Handle Meant to reduce chaos at Dombivli station, a new foot overbridge at its Kalyan-end is making commuters sweat, quite literally. Users say it is too steep to climb and could be dangerous, particularly for senior citizens. Passenger body Bharatiya Rail Yatri first highlighted the difficulties faced by train users, calling it an "engineering disaster". Citizens have been complaining of cramps, too. and space constraints made it look so and that they would fix it soon. Commuters said the staircase is almost like a ladder. "I request everyone to be careful on these steps. Cannot see an old man or woman tumbling down. Dombivlikars should take up the issue immediately with the authorities concerned," Pankaj S Joshi said. Dombivli has one of the highest passenger densities among stations beyond Thane. Representation pic Another commuter Pankaj Jaiswal said, "Old people are not able to climb and get down properly. They took two years to construct the bridge and they constructed it with a flaw." Rail user Pranay Sawant said the gradient is too steep and one may fall on it. "I saw it yesterday for the first time since the lockdown and one needs to be careful while negotiating the stretch." Central Railway chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said they are working on providing a solution to ease the inconvenience. "The bridge has a direct approach to the main road from the staircase because of which the steps rise a bit more for adjustment. It is also due to space constraints at the site. An extra railing in the centre will be provided to help use it with further ease," said a senior engineer from Mumbai division. mid-day had front-paged a report last year on the dilapidated remains of an old bridge that posed great risks to commuters and trains at Dombivli station. The report prompted railway authorities to bring it down immediately. "The new foot overbridge is 6-metre wide with three spans. It also links the skywalk on the east side," said an official. Dombivli has one of the highest passenger densities among stations beyond Thane. As per a study done by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, the peak hour section load, between 8.30 am and 9.30 am towards CSMT and 6.30pm-7.30pm in the direction of Kalyan, was between 40,000 to 50,000 passengers. 6MTSWidth of the new FoB at Dombivli station 50kApprox. passenger footfall at Dombivli station during peak hours before lockdown.

11 stations on CR, 8 on WR; upgrade will focus on making them less congested to allow for social distancing.
The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has received approval from the Railway Board for a Rs 947-crore revamp of 19 stations — 11 on the Central Railway (CR) and eight on the Western Railway (WR). MRVC has already begun planning the redesign of a few of these stations, with a focus on making them less congested to allow for social distancing. MRVC officials said that they received approval for the new designs of 14 of the 19 stations during the lockdown, when they were doing the paperwork for this multi-crore project. The 19 stations are Bhandup, Mulund, Kasara, GTB Nagar, Chembur, Govandi, Mankhurd,

Neral, Shahad, Thane and Dombivali on the Central Railway; and Mumbai Central, Khar, Jogeshwari, Kandivali, Bhayander, Mira Road, Vasai and Nallasopara on the Western Railway.
MRVC officials said they were mainly looking at remodelling smaller stations, which have remained congested during the lockdown even though local trains haven’t been open to all. An official, who did not wish to be named, said, “We want to create more breathing space at these stations. Their entrances will be widened, and ticketing counters, food stalls and other amenities will be shifted to the upper deck.”
Redesigns of 14 of the 19 stations have already been approved
The revamp of the 19 stations is part of the Rs 33,690-crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3A which will augment the suburban rail system, especially in the northern suburbs and across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.MRVC has awarded consultancies for architectural planning and environmental and social impact assessment, and has invited expressions of interest for a detailed design engineering consultancy. An MVRC official said the process was delayed because of Covid-19, but most of the concept plans have been approved.Subhash Gupta, president of Rail Yatri Parishad, said, “There is a need to decongest Mumbai’s railway stations, especially the smaller ones. The railways should also do something to clear obstructions outside stations to allow people to enter and exit them easily.”
