Hubballi: Residents of Hubballi and Belagavi have been involved in a tussle over the time of arrival of train No. 16589, Rani Chennamma Express for more than 15 years. The train from Bengaluru reaches Hubballi at 5.35am and Belagavi at 8.25am.For several years, Belagavi residents have been demanding railway authorities to change the train’s timing so that it reaches Belagavi by 7am. Businessmen and office goers from the city say they are at a disadvantage due to the train reaching the city late in the morning. Their demand has always faced stiff opposition from people of Hubballi.Union minister of state for railways Suresh Angadi, who had also made a similar demand when he was elected an MP for the first time, is caught between the demands of his constituents and opposition from Hubballi residents. At a meeting held in Belagavi last week, Angadi had promised that the schedule of Rani Chennamma...

Express would be altered so that it reaches Belagavi between 6 and 7am. His statement was expected to face opposition from Hubballi. However, Angadi seems to have pleased both the sides by promising another train between Bengaluru and Belagavi on Sunday.Belagavi District Kannada Sanghatanegala Kriya Samiti president Ashok Chandaragi recalled that the arrival of Rani Chennamma Express at Belagavi by 7am is a long-pending demand of Belagavi residents.“When Angadi became the MP for the first time in 2004, the public had made this demand and he had written to the railway ministry about it. Later he had repeated the same request in 2008. As soon as he wrote the letter, people of Hubballi had objected to the demand for changing the train’s timing. Whenever such issues arise, elected representatives of Hubballi unite irrespective of party affiliation. But in Belagavi, each party has three-four factions and they never unite. This was another hurdle for Angadi,” he added.“As he has now become the railway minister, we had hoped that he would lobby for the change in timing of the train. But there was also the fear of facing criticism from Hubballi. By announcing a new train between Bengaluru and Belagavi, he has appeased passengers of both the cities of North Karnataka,” said Chandaragi.Vasant Ladawa, former president of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Hubballi, recalled that KCCI had opposed Angadi’s demand for changing the train’s timings five – six years ago. “If Rani Chennamma Express reaches Belagavi by 6-7am, then it will pass through Hubballi around 3am, which is an odd time for Hubballi-Dharwad people. We don’t have any other daily express around the same time,” he added.Ladawa however welcomed the move of running a new train between Belagavi and Bengaluru. “If the timing of Rani Chennamma Express is disturbed, we won’t sit quietly” he added.New train’s timingsAs per Suresh Angadi’s instruction, the South Western Railway headquarter has communicated to its inter-departments to run a daily overnight special express train between Bengaluru and Belagavi from June 29. The train containing 14 conventional coaches will depart Bengaluru at 9pm and reach Belagavi at 7.30am. In the return direction, it will depart Belagavi at 9pm and reach Bengaluru at 7.30am. The train will have limited stoppages at Tumakuru, Arsikere, Davanagere, Haveri, Hubballi and Dharwad.

Soon, the Rani Chennamma Express, which runs between Kolhapur and Bengaluru via Hubballi will be given a makeover under Project Utkrisht.
Rani Chennamma Express set for a swanky upgrade! Under Indian Railways’ ambitious Project Utkrisht, the South Western Railway zone is upgrading the rakes of more than 20 trains. Also, the colours of the coaches of these trains are being changed. A South Western Railway official confirmed to Financial Express Online that soon, the Rani Chennamma Express, which runs between Kolhapur and Bengaluru via Hubballi will be given a makeover under Project Utkrisht. The train will be upgraded at Carriage Repair Workshop in Hubballi. Project Utkrisht aims to upgrade trains with ICF-design coaches to bring them at par with LHB coaches.

A sum of Rs 60 lakh is allotted to develop rakes of each train under the project with modern features such as smooth toilet flush, LED lighting, attractive PVP stickers, braille signage, bio-toilets in every coach and many more. The colour of the exterior of the coaches will also be changed into a combination of yellow and blood red colours.
Under Project Utkrisht, the rakes of Hubballi-Varanasi-Hubballi Express train has already been upgraded. Other than Hubballi-Varanasi Express and Rani Chennamma Express, the Hubballi workshop will be upgrading more than 18 rakes. Apart from providing the rakes with modern facilities and passenger-friendly amenities, stickers of famous Indian monuments such as Taj Mahal, Vidhana Soudha, Delhi Red Fort as well as pictures of other heritage structures will also be displayed in the coaches. This financial year, there are plans to upgrade hundreds of rakes of Mail/Express trains. Some of the other trains, that were recently upgraded under the Project Utkrisht include Okha-Varanasi Express, Okha-Jaipur Express, Darjeeling Mail, Chennai-Sengottai Silambu Express among others.
Meanwhile, the national transporter is also replacing the ICF (Integral Coach Factory) designed coaches with new LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches. This financial year, Indian Railways is eyeing to replace as many as 120 ICF designed rakes with LHB ones. The Railway Ministry has already stopped the production of ICF designed coaches. Based on German technology, the LHB coaches offer better riding comfort. They also boast anti-climbing features, making them safer as compared to ICF coaches, in case of an accident.

Under Project Utkrish, which was launched by Indian Railways last year, rakes of more than 20 trains of the South Western Railway are being upgraded and colours of the coaches of these trains are also being changed. Rakes of Hubballi-Varanasi- Hubballi Express train have already got a makeover and soon, Rani Chennamma Express — which runs between Kolhapur and Bengaluru via Hubballi — will also change its colour.
The makeover is getting done at century-old Carriage Repair Workshop in Hubballi itself. Under the project, Rs 60 lakh is allotted to develop rakes of each train with smart facilities like smooth toilet flush, LED lighting, attractive PVP stickers, braille signage, bio-toilets in every coach and many more. Besides Varanasi and Rani Chennamma Express, the Hubballi workshop will be upgrading more than 18 rakes soon. The workshop has already upgraded rakes of Hubballi-Varanasi Express and it started running on May 25. Stickers like Taj Mahal, Vidhana Soudha, Delhi Red Fort and pictures of other heritage structures will be displayed in the coaches.
Coaches of the Varanasi train have already been upgraded by the workshop and put into service. Carriage Repair Workshop deputy chief manager Jayant Ramachandran said implementation of Project Utkrisht began with Central Railways and Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, upgrading the coaches. However, for the South Western Railway, the coaches are redeveloped at Hubballi workshop only, he added.
“Most of the complaints about Indian railways are related to cleanliness. Rakes upgraded under the project will help change that image for passengers. Fire extinguishers are placed at every coach to use in case of emergency. Improved facilities in the coaches will ensure a comfortable train journey for passengers,” Ramachandran said.
