As part of Mission Raftaar, Indian Railways is working in mission mode to improve the average speed of trains across the network. Increasing the speed will ensure upto 60 per cent increase in the average speed of passenger trains and the doubling of an average speed of freight traffic.
Government has given its approval for increasing the speed of the Delhi-Mumbai route and the Delhi-Howrah routes, both including Kanpur-Lucknow, to 160 Kmph by 2022-23 at a total cost of Rs 6,806 crore and Rs 6,685 crore respectively. This will ensure improved speed, service, safety and create capacity.

part of Mission Raftaar, Indian Railways is working in mission mode to improve the average speed of trains across the network. Increasing the speed will ensure upto 60 per cent increase in the average speed of passenger trains and the doubling of an average speed of freight traffic.
The 1,483 km long Delhi-Mumbai Route passes through seven states--Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The travel time between New Delhi and Mumbai will be reduced by 3.5 hours, now making it a fully overnight journey. Increasing the maximum speed of the Delhi-Mumbai route will also give further impetus to semi-high speed trains.
On the other hand, the 1,525 Kms long Delhi-Howrah Route passes through five states--Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The travel time between New Delhi and Howrah will be reduced by 5 hours, making it an overnight journey. Increasing the maximum speed of the Delhi-Howrah route will also give further impetus to semi-high speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express.
This will allow such trains to unlock their full potential and travel at a speed of 160 Kmph, to ensure passengers have best in class speed and service. In addition, it has been found that the safer LHB coaches too can be made fit for this speed.
The scope of the project includes fencing, Automatic Train Protection System (ETCS 2/TPWS), Mobile Train Radio Communication, and automated and mechanised diagnostic systems, which will considerably enhance safety and reliability. Besides the above main inputs, the policy also requires removal of all level crossings which are being eliminated otherwise under a separate plan head.
The entire project has been structured on a new approach of route wise single composite work with single agency execution, and complete funding through  Extra Budgetary Resources - Institutional Finance (ERB-IF). With improved funding, better coordination, economies of scale, and induction of state of the art technology, the project will be completed in 4 years from the date of approval.  Furthermore, work along the line will be planned with minimum disruption of traffic, ensuring passengers and businesses are least affected during the construction phase.
The project will help boost employment during the construction phase with more than 3.6 crore mandays to be generated directly. It will also help kick start an economic multiplier that will give a boost to growth in all states. The project will also lead to an increase in throughput on the route by 30-35%, paving the way for PPP models in the future.
As a part of Mission Raftaar, Government has also granted similar approval for the Delhi-Mumbai route, which together with the Delhi-Howrah route account for 29% of passenger traffic and 20% of freight traffic. Railways is also working to cover the complete Golden Quadrilateral and Diagonals of Indian Railways, which consist of 16% of the total Indian Railways Network, but account for 52% of total passenger traffic and 58% of total freight traffic.

* The Indian Railways plan to increase the speed of trains in Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Howrah routes to 160 kmph from 130 kmph
* Under a new plan, the Railways may consider giving premium trains including Rajdhanis and Shatabdis to private players

There are two Rajdhani Rajshani Express trains between the national capital and financial capital -- one is Train number 12952/12951 New Delhi-Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express and another is Train number 12953/12954 August Kranti Rajdhani Express.
Indian Railways to run the new Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express via Bhopal on a daily basis? In good news for Indian Railways passengers, the Central Railway zone is mulling to put forward a suggestion to the Railway Board to run the new Rajdhani Express between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) on a daily basis. So far Train number 22221/22222 CSMT-NZM-CSMT bi-weekly Rajdhani Express train, which was started in January, runs on two days in a week. Kumar was quoted in a PTI report saying that the occupancy in the new train is nearly 100 per cent. After seeing the overwhelming response, Central Railway wants an increase in the frequency of Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express train.
According to Central Railway, one of the main reasons behind the success of the new Rajdhani Express train service is a number of people booking tickets and travelling to Agra from Mumbai and Nashik from Delhi. Apart from this new train service, there are two Rajdhani Rajshani Express trains between the national capital and financial capital — one is Train number 12952/12951 New Delhi-Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express and another is Train number 12953/12954 August Kranti Rajdhani Express. However, both these Rajdhani runs on the Western Railway route. This new train is the first Rajdhani Express in Maharashtra that stops on crucial stations in Madhya Pradesh.
The new Rajdhani Express train offers several passenger-friendly amenities such as; free on-board WiFi infotainment, virtual reality 3D wearable devices, upgraded washroom amenities, upgraded linen, real-time feedback with a mobile app, water saving aerators for taps, swanky First AC, hand-held terminals with TTEs for real-time ticket status update. Recently the New Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express experimented with a new push-and-pull technology to help reduce the total time taken for the journey. This is done by using one electric engine in the front and the other at the rear end of the train.
Train number 22221/22222 CSMT-NZM-CSMT bi-weekly Rajdhani Express train route: The Delhi Mumbai Rajdhani leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin on every Thursday and Sunday at 4.15 pm and arrives at CSMT at 11.55 am next day. From Mumbai, the train leaves Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai on every Wednesday and Saturday at 2.50 pm and reaches Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi at 10.20 am next day. The train has stoppages at Agra, Jhansi, Bhopal, Khandwa, Jalgaon, Nashik and Kalyan apart from CSMT and Hazrat Nizamuddin.
12951/52 New Delhi-Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express route: The train runs on seven days a week. The train stops at Kota Junction, Nagda Junction, Ratlam, Vadodara, Surat, Borivali, Mumbai Central and New Delhi.
12953/54 August Kranti Rajdhani Express route: The August Kranti Rajdhani Express runs on seven days. The train makes stoppages at Andheri, Borivali, Vapi, Valsad, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Dahod, Ratlam, Kota, Sawai Madhopur, Mathura.

With the introduction of twin-engine operation, the Indian Railways will soon be able to add two more passenger coaches to Rajdhani and other air-conditioned express trains besides cutting their travel time by several minutes, two officials familiar with the matter said.
With this system, the electricity required to run the train’s air-conditioning system is sourced from the overhead cable, instead of two power cars currently attached to the train. This will enable the railways to attach two more 3-tier AC coaches to the train, creating space for another 100 plus passengers, the officials explained. Currently, the Rajdhani Express has 22 coaches that can carry 1,200 passengers.

Research Design and Standards Organisation of the Indian Railways certified the twin-engine operation on express trains on February 7. The first commercial run of the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani train with twin engines took place on February 13. It saved 106 minutes from the usual travel time of 19 hours — the 1,543-km journey was covered in around 17 hours. The railways’ internal report says another 10 minutes can be saved through minor changes. “By push-pull arrangement of locomotives equipped with hotel load converter, both end power car may also be replaced by passenger coaches. We have proposed all Rajdhanis to be operated under push-pull method as it will not only save time but also increase the revenue by giving space for more passengers,” said one of the persons, a senior railway official. The railways have started installing “converters” on Rajdhanis to draw electricity from overhead cable in order to run the AC system in the trains. Following this, the two power cars attached to the train will be replaced by two AC coaches.
With one engine at the front and another at the back, the train will be able to accelerate faster saving not only time but also ensuring passenger comfort as the application of brakes from both ends will reduce vibration, the official added. “This [twin-engine operation] is a tested method across the world and we are hopeful of implementing it in a big way. The operation of twin WAP7 loco in push-pull mode has been planned and for this one pair of WAP7 loco and rake has been modified. It will result in significant saving in running time around 116 minutes between New Delhi-Mumbai,” said the second railway official.
The Railways’ had tested the twin-engine operation first on a special Rajdhani train between Nizamuddin and Mumbai about a year ago. But at that time, both the engines were placed together at the front leading to excessive vibration every time the driver applied the brakes.
“Coupler forces [that connect two coaches] are universally distributed when one engine is at the front and one at the back. They have been synched through wire which runs from front to back. Once the decision is approved, the Railway Board can take a call on manufacturing of more engines,” the person added.
