The railway lines intersecting Thanagundi tanda near Thanagunda Railway Station in Yadgir district are turning out to be a curse for the residents.
“It [crossing the tracks] is an everyday peril for us… our demand for the construction of a railway overbridge or underbridge has been ignored. Our hope now lies with Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge. He knows about the problems of the people in the district,” Lakshman Pawar, a resident, said.
Children have suffered injuries while crossing the unmanned railway crossing. Six-year-old Payal Rathod lost a leg when a goods train
hit her while she was crossing the track. Although residents claimed there had been only a few fatal accidents, official figures are not available about the deaths caused by such accidents. However, inquiries with the railways confirmed that Payal had suffered injuries while crossing the track.
Another resident said there were around 200 houses on either side of the tracks, and residents visit each other frequently. Children have to cross the tracks to reach school.
An underbridge will help people take their cattle to farmlands too.
Now, farmers take a circuitous route travelling 20 km to reach their fields, which otherwise are just a stone’s throw away from their houses across the track.
Manoj Joshi, Divisional Railway Manager, South Central Railway, told The Hindu over phone that there was no proposal to construct a bridge at the tanda. “If State submits a proposal, we will consider it,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner F.R. Jamadar said if the residents approached the district administration with the demand, he would order preparation of a proposal for the construction of either ROB or RUB and send it to the authorities.
