The Sanvordem Curchorem Rail Consumers Association (SCRCA) has demanded that the railways restart passenger trains between Collem and Vasco and the express trains that ran along the Londa-Vasco route before they were suspended in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
SCRCA president Devanand Bhandari demanded that the booking counter at the Sanvordem-Curchorem station be reopened soon. He said that with the booking counter being shut, people who need to avail refund of their train tickets for journeys that were booked before the suspension of trains, have to travel all the way to Vasco for the purpose.

present, while all passenger trains remain suspended, only the Vasco-Nizamuddin Goa Express train service has resumed. Before the suspension of the trains, six trains, i.e three pairs of express and passenger trains, would run daily on this stretch. SWR officials said the ongoing track doubling works would enable the railways to introduce additional passenger train services.
“There is huge demand for introducing of new passenger trains from representatives of public connecting Goa with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which can be fulfilled only by completing doubling of railway track,” SWR chief public relations officer E Vijaya said.

Countering the charges of the anti-coal brigade, South Western Railway (SWR) officials on Wednesday said that the track doubling work, from Hospet to Vasco was aimed at strengthening the railway network and improving connectivity.
SWR additional general manager, P K Mishra, told reporters via video conferencing, that since emphasis was being laid for usage of environment-friendly and non-conventional sources of energy for power generation, the use of coal was gradually reducing. This, he said, reflected in a reduction in coal transported by railways over the last few years.
In 2015-16, SWR carried 12

million tonnes of coal which has reduced to nine million tonnes in 2019-20, a reduction of 25% within span of four years, it was informed.
SWR deputy general manager and chief public relations officer, E Vijaya, said that the double-tracking project would prove to be a “game-changer” for Goa, “taking development to new heights by giving impetus to trade and enabling easier and faster passenger movement”.
Pointing out that the track doubling work will lead to improved connectivity resulting in enhanced arrival of tourists in Goa, Vijaya said, “In 2019, approximately 80 lakh tourists visited Goa, of which around 32 lakh, which is 40 %, travelled by train. It is anticipated that domestic tourism will witness an unprecedented surge post Covid. To facilitate more and more tourists to visit Goa, railway infrastructure shall be equipped to handle more number of trains.”
Stating that many intermediate stations along the Hospet-Vasco route, such as Sanvordem-Curchorem, had huge untapped tourist potential, Vijaya said that by extending better rail connectivity to these stations, “the hidden potential can be unlocked giving scope to generating more places of tourist interest, thereby augmenting revenue to the state.”
“By providing connectivity from Vasco and Margao to towns such as Collem, Kalay, Sanvordem-Curchorem, the local economy at these places will prosper,” she said.
On a query whether measures were being put in place to check pollution levels enroute, Mishra said that the electrification of the double line track – which is also underway - will make the route carbon neutral, leading to zero pollution.
As regards concerns about environmental damage, Vijaya said that the second track will be laid without causing any additional impact on the ecosystem. “Destruction of the environment will be minimised during the construction work.”
“The vision of “vibrant Goa” with a flourishing economy can be realised only by having a rail network that will take care of transport requirements of tomorrow efficiently, she said.
P K Kshatriya, chief project manager, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd and S K Jha, additional divisional railway manager of the Hubballi division were also present on the occasion.

South Western Railway has used the lockdown period to complete major track maintenance works, which has helped increasing the sectional speed (speed at which train runs) between stations. Maintenance of track is an integrated part of train operations and has a direct impact on both the safety of tracks as well as in maintaining the maximum permissible speed of the trains. Maintaining the railway lines, points, crossings, sleepers and ballast for enhancing the safety, speed and reliability are being taken-up during the maintenance.
On SWR track maintenance works are being regularly carried out between Londa and Miraj section and Londa and Vasco sections of Hubballi division. This facilitated increase in sectional speed from 100 Kmph to 110 Kmph. Faster trains can be

run now due to this enhancement of speed.
Works such as increase in super-elevation at curves, correction of transition length, through tamping, attending points and crossings with track machine named UNIMAT have been completed enabling this speed increase . Recouping of Ballast to maintain cushion, recouping missing permanent way fittings have also been completed.
After inspection, Commissioner of Railway Safety has permitted increasing of sectional speed for 186 Km between Londa to Miraj and 19 Km between Sanvordem – Vasco of Hubballi Division.
Details of increase in speed permitted by CRS is as below
Londa – Miraj Section – 186 Km.
1) Between Km 559/450 to 745/200 from 105 Kmph to 110 kmph in Sanvordem – Vasco section – 19 Km
2) Between Km 69.13 to 82.75 from 100 Kmph to 110 Kmph
3) Between Km 92.50 to 99.30 from 100 Kmph to 110 Kmph
Increasing speed on the section was undertaken under the direction of Shri Vipul Kumar, PCE/SWR. The progress of work has been planned and monitored by Shri Arvind Malkhede, DRM/UBL and executed by the Branch officers of Hubballi Division.
Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, GM/SWR has informed that increasing of speed on this section will improve mobility. He stated that SWR is on Mission mode to remove bottle necks of Permanent Speed Restrictions impeding speed of trains.

South Western Railway is set to raise maximum permissible speeds on the 186 km Londa-Miraj section to 110 kmph. Speed on the 19 km Sanvordem-Vasco section is also likely to be raised soon.
This move is likely to result in a slight reduction of time taken by trains to cover these sections. It is not clear if the savings will be passed on to passenger timetables.
The Commissioner for Railway Safety has permitted raising of speeds on both sections, part of Hubballi division.

A massive protest by hundreds of men, women and children was held in south Goa’s Chandor village over the doubling of the railway line to Karnataka. Protesters sat on a railway track, where work was set to begin for doubling of tracks on Sunday night. The protestors lit candles and spent the night on the rail tracks until dawn to prevent the rail staff from beginning work. There were protesters who beat drums and danced in traditional Goan style.Top police officials including South Goa Superintendent of Police also failed to pacify the protesters. According to the protesters under the banner of 'Goyant Kollso Naka' (GKN-don't want coal in Goa), the doubling of track works between Vasco in Goa to Hospet in Karnataka’s Ballari is being undertaken solely for the purpose of transporting coal from the state to neighbouring Karnataka. The protests were also supported by the opposition parties in Goa namely...

the Congress, Goa Forward Party and the AAPSunday night’s protests are also against the environmental destruction, which residents and environmental groups allege will take place to make way for projects common to both states.
According to the environmental group, Greens, nearly 50,000 trees within the eco sensitive Western Ghats region are set to be felled for expansion of railway lines, highways (NH-4A) and drawing of a new high tension power spread across protected forests in and around Mollem village. The railway doubling line even involves cutting of trees in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary and a national park on the border of the state. The projects have already been cleared by the National Wildlife Board for Wildlife in April much to the dismay of environmental activists who have now approached the courts. The opposition parties, civil society groups and tourism stakeholder bodies have also expressed apprehension about these projects being pushed at an "express pace" to facilitate movement of coal imported through the Mormugao Port Trust facility in Goa to steel mills in Karnataka's Ballari.
