The civil construction of the long-pending fifth and sixth lines between Thane and Diva is expected to be completed by April, with completion of the rail flyover near Mumbra station.
Railway officials said the steel girders to be used on the flyover were awaiting approvals from the Research Design and Standards Organisation. “The girders are being fabricated in Kota and are expected to arrive in the city within a fortnight,” an official said.
After the civil construction is completed, the Railways will need to work on the yard remodelling at both ends.

This will integrate the new lines with the existing ones through a series of nine cuts and connections at 12 locations along the corridor, each of which would require a 10-hour megablock.
Officials said they were already planning on the blocks and should be ready with a schedule around the same time.
The two additional lines are key to reducing the load currently borne by Central Railway (CR), as they will allow segregation of long-distance passenger trains and suburban services between Kurla and Kalyan. The patch between Thane and Diva is a bottleneck at the moment, with six lines each operational between Diva and Kalyan and Thane and Kurla.
The project, which is being executed by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, sanctioned under the second phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP 2) in 2008. It has since been plagued by several delays with the cost of the project has increased from around ₹140 crore to around ₹500 crore.
The two lines are among three pending MUTP 2 projects, and the only one nearing completion. The fifth and sixth line between Kurla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, being executed by CR, and the sixth line between Mumbai Central and Borivali, being executed by Western Railway, also sanctioned under MUTP 2, are far from completion.

One person died and two others were injured in three different accidents related to overcrowding on local trains along the Central Railway (CR) network on Wednesday. All three accidents took place between Mumbra and Kalwa, during peak hours in the morning. So far in 2020, four people have died and six have been injured after they fell off local trains on CR.
According to Government Railway Police (GRP), the three accidents took place between 9.30am and 10am, on the slow track and on trains bound for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Haji Rayees Ahmed, 53, was forced to stand on the footboard because the train was overcrowded, said officials. He fell off the train near Kharegaon and died.

42-year-old Imtiaz Hyder Shaikh and 23-year-old Abu Osama suffered serious head injuries. Shaikh and Osama are undergoing treatment at Thane’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital (also known as Kalwa Hospital).
An officer from Kalwa GRP, requesting anonymity, said, “Ahmed suffered multiple injuries and was declared dead on arrival at Kalwa Hospital. He fell off the train around 10am near Kharegaon. The two injured, Shaikh and Osama, suffered injuries at 10 am and 9.30am respectively.”
While Shaikh and Osama are Mumbra residents, Ahmed was visiting the city. “Ahmed owned a shop in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. On the day of accident, he left my home in Mumbra and was traveling to Mumbai to meet a relative,” said Ahmed’s cousin, Mohammad Aslam Shaikh.
Imtiaz Hyder Shaikh, who suffered injuries on Wednesday, told HT he had been on his way to Vikhroli for work. “I had caught 9:28 am CSMT local. However, it was crowded and I was hanging from the door. Due to pressure from the crowd, my hand slipped and I fell off the train. We have to bear this overcrowding daily as by the time the train arrives at Mumbra, it is packed during peak hours,” he said.
Osama works as a mechanic and was also going to CSMT for work. Two months ago, Osama’s younger brother had fallen off a crowded local, said his mother Isratunissa Shaikh. “My younger son too met with similar accident and suffered injuries on his hands. He recovered from the injury just recently,” said Isratunissa, 45.
Nandkumar Deshmukh, president of Railway Passengers’ Association, Thane, said overcrowding is a persistent problem and his organisation has repeatedly requested that CR increase the number of capacity of trains operating during peak hours. In 2019, 45 people died after falling off local trains.

This is a clear-cut example of how a chain-reaction works. On Friday, around 5 am, a dumper damaged a barrier at a level crossing (LC) gate at Ambivali. This was enough to disrupt the morning peak-hour schedule of the Central Railway (CR). Not only were suburban trains running late by 30 minutes or more, even the long-distance trains queued all the way till Igatpuri. The consequences were more serious, for a suburban train commuter, Rajesh Sharma, who fell from a moving train between Diva and Mumbra stations due to the packed local trains. The driver of this dumper truck, while swerving his vehicle, hit the barrier called a boom in railway lingo. The impact was such that it hit the 25000 volt overhead cables (OHE) which disconnects power supply to trains. It also triggered fluctuation in signals there, as the boom is connected to them, and based on its movement, does it...

send signals to the trains. On January 3, Mumbai Mirror reported how the three LC gates at Ambivli, Diva and Kalwa had become a headache for rail commuters and CR administration as many train services ran several thousand minutes late in 2019.“The restoration was completed by 6.10am. However it had repercussions on both suburban and long distance trains on Kalyan-Kasara stretch,” said Shivaji Sutar, chief PRO, Central Railway. This incident partially paralysed the entire suburban rail system of CR. “Trains were arriving more than 30 minutes late and crowds at platforms were swelling. People started getting down on tracks and boarding from other side of the trains as well. It was chaotic,” said P Shewale, a resident of Titwala. There was no respite from the chaos. In fact, it just worsened. “We came to know that a man fell between Diva and Mumbra stations just before the tunnel. It took over two hours for a train to reach Masjid station from Dombivali,” said Lata Argade, vice president, Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh.Sharma fell off from a fast local running towards CSMT between Diva and Mumbra stations at around 8.45am. The RPF staff rushed to the site in search for him. During this period a local train passing by helped the RPF after the Guard of the train to intensify the search. After finding Sharma, the RPF staff and the guard halted an approaching slow train going towards CSMT. Later, they took him to the emergency medical room for first aid and later shifted to the civil hospital in Thane for further treatment.According to figures collated by the Government Railway Police (GRP), in 2019, as many as 2,691 commuters died on Mumbai’s suburban rail network. Of these, 611 commuters died after falling from a moving train while 1455 people died while crossing tracks. This takes an average of 7 people per day.“There has been a drop in the number of commuters who have died on rail tracks when compared to the last two years,” said Ravindra Sengaonkar, GRP Commissioner. In 2018, there were 2,981 death on tracks of which 711died after falling from trains and 1,619 died while crossing tracks. In 2017, the numbers were quite high after 3,014 people dying with a daily average of 8 people per day. Off these 654 commuters fell from moving train and 1,651 people died while crossing tracks.

Thane Government Railway Police (GRP) officer said Sharma was hanging on the footboard and overcrowding led to the accident. A case of accident was registered. The victim was taken to Thane Civil Hospital for treatment, added the officer. His condition is stable.
In the other incident, around 12.30pm on platform no. 7 of Thane station, Mary Gabriel, 70, fell while trying to board the Netravati express to Kerala. “I boarded the train. However, my wife was still on the platform when it started moving. She tried to board but fell on the platform. Her legs came between the gap of the train and the platform and she was injured,” said Gabriel’s husband. Her condition is stable.
