Maharashtra, which is the worst-affected state, added over 63,294 positive cases in just 24 hours on Sunday. This was the highest-ever single-day spike. However, it is to be noted that the surge comes in the backdrop of a record 263,137 tests done. There are 5,65,587 active cases in the state at present.
Amid the massive surge, the state government has taken several steps to contain the spread of the virus. Earlier in the day, the government has decided to set up three jumbo field hospitals in Mumbai in the next five-six weeks, said city civic chief Iqbal Singh Chahal on Monday.
Each of these medical facilities will have a capacity of 2,000 beds, including 200 ICU beds and 70% oxygen beds. They will be set up at three different locations in the city, Chahal was quoted as saying by PTI.
In addition to this, the government has also requested certain four-star and five -star hotels to create CCC2 facilities (Covid-19 care centres for patients), which will be "dovetailed and run by professionals from major private hospitals".
Apart from this, vaccinations will resume from today at 62 of the 71 designated private hospitals in Mumbai where the drive was halted earlier due to non-availability of anti-Covid shots, a PTI report said. In the country's financial capital, 49 civic and government-run institutions are designated as vaccination centres while 71 private hospitals have the facility to administer the Covid 19 vaccines.
As per the Union Health Ministry said on Monday, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan have shown a steep rise in the daily COVID-19 cases accounting for 83.02 per cent of the new infections.
It also said, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala cumulatively account for 70.16 per cent of India's total active cases. Maharashtra alone accounts for 47.22% of the total active caseload of the country.

The railways' COVID care coaches have been requisitioned by the administration of Nandurbar, one of the smallest districts of Maharashtra, to augment its efforts in dealing with the pandemic as the region has reported 400 cases daily since the last month.
The district administration had imposed a lockdown from March 31 till April 15.
Each COVID care rake has 20 coaches consisting of modified sleeper and general coaches and each of these coaches can accommodate 16 patients.

Nandurbar administration has asked for more than 90 such coaches, out of which 21 have already been provided, an official said on Monday.
"Out of 128 isolation coaches in Mumbai division, 21 coaches have been given to the Maharashtra government for use in Nandurbar district. Nandurbar collector had asked Western Railway to provide such coaches," Sumit Thakur, chief PRO, Western Railway, told PTI.
He said these coaches were provided from Surat.
A Memorandum of Understating was signed between the District Magistrate of Nandurbar and the Divisional Railway Manager of Western Railway in this regard.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare guidelines, the responsibilities of maintaining the coaches will be shared by the railways and the state government.
The national transporter will be responsible for the basic infrastructure and maintenance of the premises like cleaning and sanitisation of platforms, providing housekeeping materials like linen and blankets, management of bio-toilets, power and electric supply arrangements, watering, communication facilities and signage and marking of different areas.
It will also provide catering and oxygen cylinders in the coaches.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) will provide security at station premises and the platform area where the coaches have been placed.
The district administration will be responsible for refilling of oxygen cylinders, waste disposal, catering, doctors and paramedical staff, ambulance and overall supervision.
These railway coaches can be used for very mild cases that can be clinically assigned to the COVID care centres, the guidelines said.
These modified coaches for coronavirus patients have been divided into eight bays or "cabins" with each having 16 beds.
Every coach has three toilets -- one western and two Indian style -- and a bathroom with hand showers, buckets, mugs and bathroom stools.
The coaches also have mosquito nets, bio-toilets, power sockets and oxygen cylinders.
Space has been created in these coaches to hold IV fluid bottles, extra bottle holders and clamps have been provided to hang them.
The railways, which converted more than 5,500 non-air conditioned coaches into COVID care centres had deployed 813 of them with 12,472 beds in July last year -- Delhi (503), Uttar Pradesh (270) and Bihar (40).
However, most of these coaches were not used and complaints were raised about the heat and mosquitoes inside these centres.
But the railways garnered praise for its efforts to augment the government's fight against the pandemic.
India hit a new coronavirus infection record with 1,68,912 new cases, the highest single-day rise so far, taking the total tally of cases to 1,35,27,717, according to the health ministry data updated on Monday.
The national COVID-19 recovery rate has fallen below 90 per cent.
The active cases have surpassed the 12 lakh-mark, while the death toll increased to 1,70,179 with 904 daily new fatalities, the highest since October 18, 2020, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The Railway Board has decided to implement 20 innovations by its employees to make train journeys safer and improve passenger comfort - such as a bell warning to alert travellers minutes before a train departs, real-time CCTV monitoring inside coaches, printing of unreserved tickets through mobile applications - on a mass scale.
The Railways launched a dedicated portal in 2018 to solicit the good ideas attempted by its employees across zones, aiming to implement some of them across its network. Since then, zonal railways have uploaded their entries on the web portal.
From

September 2018 to December 2019, the portal received 2,645 entries.
Of which, the Board has identified 20 for initial mass scale implementation across the railway network, according to an order issued by it on July 10.
An official said that an order has been issued to all zonal general managers and production units to gear up for the implementation of these ideas.
Most of the 20 innovations are aimed at technical improvements to boost safety.
The North Central Railway has developed a vehicular system for ultrasonic flaw detection of rails, which is currently done manually. The Malda division of Eastern Railway has used pyrometers to monitor speed and temperature of tracks. The carriage and wagon department of Allahabad division of North Central Railway has developed a detector for hot axle box in running trains much before a possible derailment due to seizure.
Some of the innovations are also directed at passenger comfort.
The Western Railway has developed natural water coolers, with zero electric consumption, each at a cost of Rs 1.25 lakh and a lifespan of ten years. The system works on principle of heat transfer where water is passed through copper coils which are covered with cooling fabric active through a water dripping system. These coolers have been installed at Borivali, Dahanu Road, Nandurbar, Udhana and Bandra railway stations.
A bell system -- developed by Allahabad division -- alerts passengers at platforms that the train is ready to depart within two minutes and they should occupy their seats. This is already in use on platform number one of Allahabad junction railway station.
On the list is also a system to monitor real-time CCTV footage on board trains.
While the coaches in Humsafar trains have CCTV surveillance, the footage is not monitored in real time. The NCR has developed a system for real-time monitoring inside trains and has installed it in all 18 coaches of Humsafar trains.
The CCTV display unit is provided in the guard's compartment and the videos can be recorded and viewed later; it is aimed at quick resolution of crimes on board trains.
Another innovation the Railways is looking at is air quality monitoring equipment developed by NCR and installed at Allahabad railway station.
With the coronavirus pandemic encouraging people to go contact-less, the Northern Railway developed a system through which they issued unreserved tickets through mobile apps and bluetooth printers.
This pilot project helped Railways to open online UTS ticketing counters at stations, platforms, tent cities and passenger holding areas without UTS connectivity and uninterrupted power supply as these devices work on lithium-ion batteries and SIM cards.
The Railway Board has instructed the zones to furnish implementation reports of these 20 innovations within the next three months.
