To contribute in Indian Railways bid to make itself carbon-free by 2030, the Mumbai Division of Central Railway has taken a number of initiatives for the use of renewable energy to safeguard the environment and also to save several lakhs of rupees. Lonavala & Khandala belt as a hill station is one of the most popular tourist spots among Indians and now Lonavala station & its adjoining railway premises will completely run on clean & green energy. This will be a feather in the cap to the already existing green stretch between Lonavala & Khandala.

along with other railway stations over Mumbai Division of Central Railway is now among the elite club of railway stations that are harnessing solar power for its operations. Central Railway has initiated a number of major green initiatives to mitigate global warming and combat climate change, by producing clean energy and saving lakhs of rupees on power bills annually. Apart from station lighting, Central Railway also installed solar panels, solar trees & solar water coolers etc.

Lonavala Railway Station’s roof top of Platform no. 2/3 is now installed with solar panels to produce 76 Kw power. The energy harnessed from the solar panels to the tune of 68,400 Kwh annually will help Lonavala railway station to save in power bills. Two beautiful solar trees each having 4x10 W LED fittings integrated with 40 W Solar Panels are erected to illuminate the Garden at the bazaar side of Lonavala station. It proved to be a cynosure to the eyes of the passengers of Lonavala. one Solar powered water cooler is also provided at Lonavala station.
Six 33W outdoor integrated type solar street poles have been provided at the entry of BVT yard Loco Pilot / Guard running room. A green gang hut is created at BVT yard, Lonavala by providing 1 Kwp rooftop storage type solar panel with two 160 Ah batteries and 1 Kva inverter, level crossing gate no.30 near Khandala station is provided with 1 Kwp rooftop storage type solar panel with two 160 Ah batteries and 1 Kva inverter. With all this use of renewable energy, Khandala - Lonavala rail stretch has turned towards green and clean energy.
Rooftop grid connected solar panels are provided at Chembur railway station 60 Kwp - 54,000 Kwh annual power generation, Dockyard Road railway station 30 Kwp -27,000 Kwh, Asangaon railway station 16.3 Kwp (solar and wind)- 14,670 kWh, Apta station 5 Kwp - 4,500 kWh,Pen station 6.3 Kwp & 5 kWp solar panel - 10,470 Kwh, Roha station 18.2 Kwp - 16,200 KWh annual power generation.

Apart from illumination of lights and charging of the batteries, Central Railway has also provided solar powered water coolers at 5 stations, one each at Pen, Apta, Roha, Neral and Lonavala stations. This 1x25 Wp Solar powered water cooler of 150 litre storage capacity with 45 LPH cooling capacity with polypropylene filter cartridge is expected to save a revenue of Rs.1.45 lakh annually.
In addition to this, CSMT station building, Kalyan Railway School, Kalyan Railway Hospital, Kurla & Sanpada Car sheds are also fitted with solar panels to meet their energy needs. The anticipated generation due to these renewable energy initiatives will be 18.73 Lakhs Kwh and saving in energy bills per annum will be Rs. 145.1 Lakhs.

These measures by Mumbai Division of Central Railway are part of Indian Railways’ long-term sustainability goals. Further, the utilization of renewable power for non-traction, which has gained popularity among Indian Railways will not only bring savings in energy expenses, but will also enable Railways to create a green, safe and livable world.

After analysing a few incidents from the past, officials come up with plan to avoid service disruption during monsoon The CR officials started the work last year In a first, the Central Railway (CR) seems to have come up with a permanent solution for the falling boulders in the ghat section known for disrupting services during monsoon. Accordingly, CR has recreated steel tunnels which will trap falling boulders and protect the passing trains below. Last year, CR deployed 60 additional CCTV cameras, posted gangmen, rock-bolting at 750m stretch and drone cameras to alert approaching trains, but all were of limited help.In 2017, three passengers on the Hubli-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Express suffered injuries after a boulder came crashing through the roof while it was passing through Khandala ghat. After the problem was analysed last year, it was revealed that the increased incidents of boulders falling on tracks...

along with mud had been due to heavy monsoon. So, officials started working on the steel tunnel portal extension last year in four tunnels. "The work has been progressing with the lockdown in place and will be completed before the monsoon sets in," CR chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said. "Work of removing loose boulders is still underway and at present, we are running boulder special trains, and patrolling the mountains to scan loose boulders and tunnels," he added. In the history books Historically, the Indian Railways has been dealing with the problem of boulders in this stretch since its inception. But they never cancelled these many trains to manage the situation as they have done in recent years. The archival records of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which is now called Central Railway, on the initiation of passenger rail service on the ghat section in 1864, had issued a notice on the operation of the 'terrain section' by dividing the entire stretch into 13 parts with three watchmen deputed for each. 4 Total no. of tunnels in which steel tunnel work is underway.

MUMBAI: The 190-year-old (made up of stones) on Mumbai-Pune expressway that was built by railways for old rail network was demolished by using a controlled blasting by the MSRDC at 5.45pm today.
The 2017 structural audit had suggested that the monumental bridge may not withstand the heavy traffic passing from below it and the rough weather during monsoon and may lead to accident such as collapse.
The highway police had strongly recommended its demolition as the bridge was four-lane structure standing in the middle of six-lane expressway Taking advantage of poor

traffic amid, MSRDC decided to blast it and remove the rubble. The rubble will be cleared in next 4 days for which 1200 truck trips will be made and till then the emergency traffic has been diverted via old khandala route, said MSRDC chief engineer.
The highway police had strongly recommended its demolition as the bridge was four-lane structure standing in the middle of six-lane expressway resulting in a huge bottleneck right next to Pune bound tunnel on Lonavala stretch of expressway. MSRDC engineer said the lockdown helped in demolishing it at a cost of Rs 50 lakh or else amid live traffic the expenses on demolition would have cost Rs 4 crore and a time of 3 months. Now, once lockdown gets lifted the traffic will also move faster and reduce travel time, fuel and pollution.

The restoration work of the up-line (Pune to Mumbai) is underway at the Bhor Ghat section on Pune-Mumbai railway route, due to which two trains have been cancelled and five others diverted since October 3. To provide a long-lasting solution to this rail traffic congestion in the ghat section, the central railway has initiated a project for installing a fourth railway line.
Three rail lines already exist: up line, middle line and down line in the ghat section. Once the fourth line is operational, it will give relief to rail traffic enabling more trains to run daily through the ghats, said railway officials.

Sutar, Central Railway’s spokesperson said, “Daily, on an average, 74 trains pass through this Bhor ghat section and we have to monitor the operations very closely as it is a crucial stretch between Pune and Mumbai. So we decided to have a fourth line in the ghat section which is under conceptualization. Experts and senior officials have been working on it.”
Similarly the Central Railway has identified 4 to 5 risky spots in the ghat section with regular landslides and falling boulders during the monsoon. Small tunnels have been planned as a permanent solution to this.
“There are some spots which we have identified which are open and landslides happens here quite often. It creates problems to our train operations, then trains get delayed and entire Ghat section is affected. So we have plans to build small tunnels at these 4 to 5 spots and this work is at the primary stage. Senior officials are into discussions and hopefully this project will start soon.” added Sutar.
