The Child Help Desk functioning at the Erode Railway Junction has rescued 56 children from October to December 2020.
Rights Education and Development Centre, a non-governmental organisation, established the desk at the junction in March 2019 to rescue and rehabilitate unaccompanied, missing, run away children in the age group of 6 to 14 and child workers in the age group of 15 to 18.
The desk functions round the clock and is manned by 12 members.
The rescued children are handed over to their parents or guardian through Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the station manager. If need arises, the children are also produced at the Child Welfare Committee for care and protection.
“We have rescued 181 children in two years,” said D. Jajaraj, project coordinator. After COVID-19 lockdown relaxation, 56 children were rescued between October and December 2020, of which 48 were from Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. “Poverty is pushing the children of these States to work in Erode and nearby areas as they are employed here illegally,” he added. Many children arrived at the junction through unregistered agents or company staff of various textile mills, the coordinator said. He said that Inter State Migrant Workmen Act was violated and the families were not aware of registering their details in their native district and destination district. “Only if they register, the government can monitor them and ensure their safety,” he said.

Name boards with Hindi words installed at Erode Railway Junction on Monday.
Condemning the imposition of Hindi in name boards at the Erode Railway Junction, K.N. Basha, vice- president of the Erode District Congress Minority Wing and former member of Zonal Railway User’s Consultative Committee, questioned whether name boards in other States would have Tamil words.
In a letter to the Railways Minister, he said all the name boards at the junction were in Tamil and English so far. However, ahead of the Southern Railway General Manager’s inspection to the
junction recently, the name boards at parking stands, entrance and offices were replaced with new ones in Hindi, Tamil and English. “It is nothing but imposition of Hindi in the State,” the letter said. “If it is for the benefit of passengers, will the name boards installed at junctions in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat will also have Tamil letters,” he questioned.
He wanted the newly installed name boards replaced with boards in Tamil and English. “If not, we will blacken the Hindi text with paint,” the letter said.

The diesel engine was used on metre gauge till conversion into broad gauge.
An old locomotive engine was mounted on a pedestal constructed at the entrance of the Erode Railway Junction here on Tuesday.
Before the introduction of the electric locomotives, the diesel powered locomotives were widely used both for the passenger and goods trains.
However, after the wider usage

The engine displayed at the entrance of the junction was used on metre gauge and after the metre gauge was converted into broad gauge, the service of the engine was withdrawn.
Vintage steam locomotives were installed at the Salem Railway Divisional Office in Salem and also at the Coimbatore Railway Junction.
Sources said the General Manager of Southern Railway was expected to inaugurate the display during his inspection on Wednesday.

Indian Railways is a major contributor to Swachh Bharat Mission and has already taken a number of steps in maintaining cleanliness through its flagship program ‘Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat’.

In continuation of such efforts, a Special Cleanliness Drive has been launched throughout Indian Railways to mark the Independence Day, 2020. This week long Cleanliness Drive is being held from 10th to 16th August, 2020.

The Salem Division of Southern Railway is also conducting this cleanliness drive. During this drive, special focus is being given to cleanliness of railway tracks. Cleanliness of station offices, railway colonies, work sites, etc. is also being ensured. Particular attention is being given to collection of plastic waste along with other wastes.

In Salem Division, special cleanliness activities are being organized at major railway stations namely Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Mettupalayam and Karur. Other railway stations in the division also, even relatively smaller stations, have taken up this cleanliness drive earnestly. The railway stations in the hilly terrain of Mettupalayam – Udhagamandalam section – the Nilgiri Mountain Railway – are also undertaking special cleanliness activities. Railway officials and staff are actively involved in this cleanliness drive.

As a result of this special cleanliness drive, railway stations, railway tracks, work sites and other railway premises are sporting a cleaner look.

But, this cleanliness can continue to be maintained only with sustained efforts. Apart from such efforts by railways, the passengers, public and other stakeholders should extend their active cooperation in maintaining cleanliness at railway stations, tracks and other railway premises.

The Salem Division of Southern Railway appeals to rail users and the general public to join hands with the railways in this noble cause of maintaining high standards of cleanliness at railway stations and in trains.
