Equipment failure suspected to be the main cause of fire, says probe panel member.

Central Railway official said that a routine check-up of the four rakes was already under way but after the incident of fire in the Western Railway’s motor coach, all the electrical equipment of the AC locals would be checked thoroughly.
The committee formed by Western Railway to investigate the cause of the fire has yet to submit its report. However, a member of the inquiry team said that equipment failure could be one of the main reasons.
During investigation it was found that sparking might have started from the battery which supplies direct current to the coach. “The rake is just a year old, and despite this, it seems that the insulation of cables of battery was defective,” said the member.
The train is under warranty and a team of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), which supplied the electrical components of the train, are working on it. “The repair work is on. A specialist for the BHEL has also called for studying the root cause of this failure,” said an officer of Western Railway.
